Date: Jul. 21, 2011

John Maxwell gave a great presentation on Virtualizing using VirtualBox, Chef and Vagrant.

If you would like to find out more, you can download the slides (PDF format).

New Guy: Hey, do you have a second?
You: Sure, what's up?
New Guy: So, I'm on page 14 of my machine setup instructions, but when I'm compiling the native extensions, I get "*** extconf.rb failed ***"
You: You get what?
New Guy: *** extconf.rb failed ***
You: ... Did you do pages 1-13?
New Guy: I think so...
You: (heavy sigh) Okay, let's take a look.

No, it's not your fault, and it isn't New Guy's fault either. You just need better tools. Learn how you can easily script repeatable virtual machines using open-source software. Vagrant is a Ruby tool that allows you to provision and manage Virtualbox instances using the popular Chef and Puppet systems integration frameworks.
